"Senior" is a very abstract word. So, read on to find more about what we mean by that :)

Who we are and why we are hiring a new member

ZAGENO is looking for a python developer to work with our brilliant and well spoiled tech team in Berlin.

Our online biotech marketplace,, is growing fast, and so is our company. In size, revenue, and coffee consumption.

Our tech team is growing too. We are now looking for a new developer with a few years experience in Python that wants to join some of the smartest and most capable talents to build & deploy what is helping scientists from all over the world achieving new breakthroughs!

You are senior to us if:

  • You are a true python developer. You understand pythonic way of writing things, different coding paradigms (as opposed to an experienced developer "who can also write python code").

  • You must have used Python at least for the last 5 years. Professionally (at work, delivering projects, ...)

  • You worked with Django

  • You understand the ins and outs of what you are talking about. You don't settle for "well it works now", but you try to understand why it works or why it doesn't.

  • You worked with multithreading, you can understand the difference between CPU bound tasks and IO bound tasks

  • You can analyze, plan and scale Django based frameworks

  • A code with no unit tests gives you nightmares

You could work well with the team if:

  • You understand that *trust* (going both ways) is key for a healthy professional relationship with your team and with your lead

  • You are an honest, selfless player in a fair and selfless team. We will help you whenever you need, and we would expect you to do the same with us. It's not about you. It's about all of us (/3 Musketeers' motto here/)

  • You bring your ideas to the table, and you stand your ground when you believe in them. But also, you give others the chance to discuss their own

  • You are excited about pushing forward for code optimization, scalability, performance

Last, but not least, you are passionate and motivated about what you do and *why* you do it.

This is not just a standard recruitment sales line.

We worked really hard to build a very driven team, who works together to build a better product for all the scientists out there. Not for their own interest, not for their own team interest, but for the company's interest.

This is key in a successful company like ours.

Things you will pick up on the job:

You'll work with world class developers and you will learn how to build and work on a marketplace business that creates value and makes money (for our customers, for our suppliers, for us).

You'll realize more than in any other place that work smart is better than work hard.

Here you will experience:

  • Large scale python development, deployment and testing

  • Automation (python + shell scripts) as key to qualitatively scaling our team

  • A continuous delivery infrastructure on the cloud (Jenkins is our friend)

  • How to store, perform queries & reports and manage big data (billion, trillions of records) on/to different data sources (ElasticSearch, Postgres, Google Big Query, ...)

  • All of the technologies we use. While each of us focuses on specific areas, we help each other and learn from each other

  • How to make scientists and research departments from all over the world very, very happy

Technologies & programming languages we use:

TD;DR; Python 3.6, Postgres 9.6, ElasticSearch 5.3, Django 1.11, Redis 3.2, Less CSS and a super minimal JS library (a usable backend trumps a shiny frontend). For a more detailed list of all the stack we use, please send us a request and we'll be happy to provide you all the info.

What you will do:

You will be welcomed by and work with our small but efficient 9 people strong tech, design + ux team to develop, drive and maintain medium to large projects necessary for the development of the company.

You will receive proper requirements, steering and mentorship by our team and you will work together with some of the top biotech scientists in the field to do one or more of the following things:

  • add functionalities to our marketplace (new features, bug fixes, etc...)

  • improve our product inventory management (admin interfaces)

  • develop infrastructures to integrate with our end users (customers that buy the products) and our vendors (whoever has an inventory we can sell from)

  • help us scale (from all aspects: new tools, new processes, new features, new architectures, etc...)

Compensation & Benefits

  • "Competitive salary". To clarify what competitive is: we will offer you a salary based on your market rate + an extra 10 - 15%.

  • Share options plan (kicking in after 6 months). Although, rest assured that this does not affect negatively your salary: we are not the "get a lot of shares, but no money" workplace. We recognize the importance of a proper financial compensation but also appreciate an "everybody wins" mindset, something usually encouraged by such things like a share options plan.

  • Your choice of hardware. Workstation or laptop? Debian or OSX? DAS Keyboard? We got you covered with whatever helps you get your work done.

  • Flexitime, the real deal: after the first 3 months you can work from home 20% of the time (1 day a week) and, after the first 6 months, we can decide a work routine that better fits with your likes (and our office communication needs).

What you'll find at ZAGENO:

  • An English speaking and welcoming international team of ~25 people from more than 16 countries

  • The possibility to work together with some of the most talented minds in IT, Science, Business and Marketing

  • The opportunity to grow into your role and to develop a career with the company

  • An amazing new and spacious office in Zeughofstrasse, in the center of Kreuzberg

  • The usual cool stuff: free drinks, coffee - proper coffee! - team events, etc.

Interview Process

The interview process will be tailored to each individual, but it may generally consist of:

  • 1 phone interview (presentation + live coding session)

  • 1 on-site interview with Enrico Foschi and the tech team (if not in Berlin, we'll cover travel costs)

  • If not covered in the previous on-site interview, another quick on-site interview for a chat with one of the founders

We move quickly. In the case of a successful fit, the whole process may be as quick as 1 week long (assuming we are both available when needed).
